A significant milestone has been reached in the work against violence against women, girls, and children in Tuvalu with the start of the Gender-Based Violence Counsellor Training by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre in the capital, Funafuti on Tuesday, 15th October 2024.

This counsellor training is being facilitated by a team of experienced counsellors and trainers, including Coordinator Shamima Ali, Counsellor Supervisor Elina Cagilaba, Senior Counsellor and Manager Community Education Lavenia Tuitabu and Manager Research Ilisapeci Veibuli.

Deputy Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office Semi Malaki officially opened the two-week training, which is supported by the Government of Tuvalu, the World Bank, Australia Aid and FatuLei (Tuvalu Women for Change Association).

Participants include members of the Police, Judiciary, Community representatives, Church groups, Social Welfare Department, Youth representatives and FatuLei.

The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre is the Secretariat of the Pacific Women’s Network Against Violence Against Women which was formed in 1992. The network consists of more than 20 organisations addressing the issue of violence against women and children in their diverse communities.

In August this year, two participants from Tuvalu graduated from FWCC’s flagship 4-week Regional Training Program on Gender, Violence Against Women and Girls, Human Rights and Development. They include the founder of FatuLei (Tuvalu Women for Change Association) Filiga Taukiei Nelu and Gender Equality Advocate Alice Ave.  The Regional Training Program (RTP) has been ongoing since its inception in 1995. To date, more than 900 women and men from around the region and Fiji have undergone this training.

The Gender-Based Violence Counsellor Training in Tuvalu ends on 25th October 2024.
