FWCC to train police command group

The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre starts a five-day training for 36 police officers from the Southern Division Command Group at Suva’s Tanoa Plaza Hotel tomorrow, Tuesday, November 3, 2020.

The training is to support the Fiji Police Force to develop best practice in responding to violence against women, girls and children in order to improve services and processes when responding to survivors.

Centre Coordinator Shamima Ali said police is an important stakeholder and have a critical role in ensuring laws are enforced and survivors are treated with the dignity, respect and care they deserve.

“In the work to eliminate violence against women, one of the ongoing challenges is police response to gender-based violence reports,” Ms Ali said

“Among other issues, the training aims to help police officers improve their understanding of violence against women and girls, including gender relations and how this relates to violence against women and girls,” Ms Ali said.

Ms Ali said police are making good progress, but some entrenched sexist attitudes are difficult to shift.

The training will also include relevant legislations, awareness on the National Service Delivery Protocol and exploring prevention strategies.

The training program is supported by DFAT through FWCC and will be officially opened by the Acting Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu at 9am.
